Vodka Review: Smirnoff
Smirnoff is a solid, middle-of-the-shelf vodka ideal for including as a bar staple in both home and commercial environments. As the largest selling name brand vodka in the world, it offers instant name recognition and reliability. Smirnoff classic vodka has its roots in Russia, dating back to a distillery that was formed in Moscow in 1864, and its production remains adherent to old school Russian traditions. It’s a smooth vodka with a clean finish that works well for crafting classic cocktails such as martinis and gimlets as well as enjoying over ice. The Smirnoff story began with its classic Red Label, which is triple-distilled and charcoal filtered. It won a double gold medal at the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and continues to perform well in similar industry competitions. Unlike many of its counterparts, Smirnoff is produced from corn rather than from wheat.
Like other popular vodka brands, Smirnoff has branched out into flavored varieties in recent decades as a response to market demand. Smirnoff’s flavored varieties are a bit different, however — instead of the usual fruity offerings, Smirnoff flavored vodkas include Spiced Root Beer, Iced Cake, Fluffed Marshmallow, and Dark Roasted Espresso. Smirnoff also makes a small batch vodka called Smirnoff Black that is produced using copper stills. Both professional and home bartenders enjoy increased creativity when crafting cocktails using these unique flavors. For instance, combining Fluffed Marshmallow with orange juice in an iced highball glass creates a delectable concoction reminiscent of old-fashioned orange creamsicles.
Smirnoff products are an excellent choice for those who want a recognizable brand that provides optimal consistency and reliable quality. The brand has served as the inspiration for many of its current counterparts, yet continues to outperform them in sales and overall popularity.
